Founder and Creative Director of multi-award-winning design studio TheUrbanative, Mpho Vackier embraces African storytelling through design. A process engineer turned interior and furniture designer, Mpho’s work is a constant exploration of the role of culture and heritage representations. TheUrbanative pieces are identifiable by a juxtaposition of modern materials infused with cultural stories and references alongside skilled handwork and engineering expertise.
Sustainability is at the core of Mpho’s designs. Most of the wood used at TheUrbanative is reclaimed and 90% of the steelwork is made from recycled materials. With a firm belief in the idea and the benefits of collaborative working relationships, TheUrbanative sees the future of design in collaboration.
For the Nasara Console, Mpho and her team were drawn to Calacatta Hermitage – a classic beauty with a touch of drama. Combined with powder-coated steel, sustainable red oak, and brass accents, the piece tells a multilayered story inspired by Queen Nasara, a prolific female leader in a patriarchal tribe. Rounded corners and curved stone shapes inlaid into wooden doors and finished with modern brass knobs, the Nasara Console is a thing of beauty and strength.
About Calacatta Hermitage:
A crisp white backdrop burst through with thick, dramatic veins in a neutral taupe shade featuring bolts of darker grey and bright gold making Calacatta Hermitage a classic yet interesting choice. With all the beauty of marble and the modern benefits of engineered stone, it’s the perfect balance of style and function.
