Today, we’re spotlighting Palesa Phake, a talented interior design student at Tshwane University of Technology and a recipient of the Future Designers Fund. Palesa’s journey is a testament to the fund’s impact on empowering young African designers and fostering a more inclusive and vibrant design industry. Let’s delve into her story and explore the significance of this initiative.

Palesa, welcome! Can you tell us about your journey to interior design?

Thank you for having me! My passion for design has always been there, but financial hurdles made pursuing it a challenge. The FDF bursary came as a lifesaver, allowing me to focus on my studies and chase my dreams.

You mentioned facing financial difficulties. How did the fund support you?

The financial support I received was more than just a monetary contribution; it was a vote of confidence in my abilities and a tangible demonstration of someone believing in my potential.

The fund’s decision to cover my tuition fees was a game-changer. It meant I could focus on my studies without the constant stress and anxiety of financial insecurity. This allowed me to fully immerse myself in the learning process, explore different design concepts, and experiment with various techniques.

You were involved in student leadership throughout high school. How do those skills translate into design?

As a leader, I learned the importance of effective communication in building relationships and achieving goals. This skill is essential in the design field, where I must effectively communicate my design concepts to clients, contractors, and team members. Additionally, my leadership experiences taught me the value of collaboration. Working with diverse groups of people on shared projects helped me develop the ability to listen to different perspectives, find common ground, and work together towards a common goal. This skill is invaluable in the design process, where I often collaborate with clients, architects, and engineers to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces.

Finally, my leadership experiences instilled in me a sense of responsibility and a desire to give back to my community. As a designer, I believe that I have a responsibility to create spaces that not only look good but also serve a purpose and contribute to the well-being of society.

Your interest in starting a furniture business is intriguing. How does your design education play into that?

My interior design education equips me with a strong foundation in understanding furniture functionality, aesthetics, and market trends. This knowledge is crucial for creating and sourcing products that meet the needs and preferences of my target market. Additionally, my design education has helped me develop a keen eye for detail and a sense of style, which will be invaluable in selecting high-quality materials and finishes for my furniture.

What excites you most about the design industry in Africa?

I’m excited about the growing appreciation for local design aesthetics and the increasing demand for African-inspired products. There is a unique opportunity for African designers to create innovative and culturally relevant designs that can both celebrate our heritage and appeal to a global market. By incorporating traditional African elements into my furniture designs, I hope to contribute to the development of a distinctive and sustainable African design aesthetic.
