A Conversation with Samuel Mofokeng
Today, we’re privileged to have a conversation with Samuel Mofokeng, a recipient of the Future Designers Fund. Samuel is pursuing a Diploma in Interior Design and Interior Architecture at Design Time Cape Town. Let’s delve into his journey and the impact of the fund on his aspirations.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and why you chose to pursue interior design?
I’ve always had a passion for design, but my career started in structural steelwork. Working on various projects, I realized that the interior spaces were often overlooked. I wanted to bring my technical skills to a field where I could combine functionality with aesthetics.
How did you hear about the Future Designers Fund and what made you apply?
I was researching bursaries for design students when I came across the Future Designers Fund. The holistic approach they offer, including mentorship and emotional support, really resonated with me. It felt like they understood the challenges students face beyond just financial burdens.
What has been the most significant impact of the fund on your studies?
The fund has provided me with the financial security I needed to focus on my studies without stress. Additionally, the mentorship I’ve received has been invaluable. My mentor has guided me through the design process, shared industry insights, and helped me build my confidence.
How do you see the Future Designers Fund contributing to the design industry in Africa?
The fund is breaking down barriers for talented individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue design education. It’s fostering a more diverse and inclusive design landscape, which can only benefit the industry as a whole.
What are your future aspirations in interior design?
I hope to specialize in residential interior design and create spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and comfortable. I’m particularly interested in sustainable design and incorporating eco-friendly materials into my projects.
What advice would you give to other aspiring designers?
Never give up on your dreams. The design industry can be competitive, but with hard work, dedication, and a unique perspective, you can achieve your goals. Don’t be afraid to seek mentorship and support from others in the field.
How do you balance your studies with your personal life?
Time management is key. I try to create a structured schedule that allows me to balance my studies with my personal commitments. It’s important to take breaks and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout.
What are your thoughts on the future of design in Africa?
I’m optimistic about the future of design in Africa. There’s a growing appreciation for design and a rising demand for talented designers. With initiatives like the Future Designers Fund, we’re creating a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to the continent’s development.
The Future Designers Fund is more than just a bursary; it’s a catalyst for change. By investing in the next generation of designers, Infinity Surfaces is not only supporting individuals but also building a stronger and more inclusive design community for Africa. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of the fund on future generations of talented designers.
